General Description

Ametrine is a mix of citrine and amethyst, which in a rare % of the deposits of spirit quartz show these characteristics, amethyst infused with limonite, which gives it a purple yellow glow! Very collectible material is a modern context, as dark purples are as rare as hens teeth nowadays. Spirit Quartz, also known as Cactus Quartz, is a unique quartz habit found exclusively in the Boekenhouthoek deposits of South Africa. Since its discovery, specimens from these deposits have been highly sought after. Younger deposits exhibit exceptional dark and intense colours, while more recent ones showcase lighter shades. Some sections even produce a mix of Amethyst and Citrine coloration, giving rise to the name 'Ametrine Spirit Quartz.' However, Amethyst Spirit Quartz represents only 1% of the mined deposits. The majority of Spirit Quartz is 'white,' with subtle variations in colour. Current excavations yield Amethyst material ranging from very pale lilac to a darker purple tone, as well as plate-like specimens with the classic, rich colour intensity reminiscent of old-school deposits. Material lacking the unique spirit/cactus habit is referred to as Sunburst Amethyst due to its complex colour distribution. Despite the absence of the distinctive habit, the 'sunburst' material compensates with phantom-like colour distribution. Price is grade dependent. Items are as shown.
